Now is No Longer the Best Time to Be a Technical Writer Looking for a Job

Big Dip

Update: It’s been a couple of months since my last post, and there is now solid evidence that we are in a downturn for technical writer job postings. This is not a huge surprise, given all of the recent economic woes making the news. It also matches what I am hearing from others about various firms beginning to implement job freezes on currently open technical writer job requisitions or even cutting existing staff. Here is the current state of technical writer jobs based on the latest numbers from Indeed.com:

There is a silver lining, which is that at the moment because the peak of the technical writer hiring boom was so high earlier this year, the current dip still manages to match the previous peak from late 2015. But it is unlikely to stay the way.

Ultimately it depends on the length and depth of whatever economic downturn we are facing that will decide future employment numbers. But it seems like the recent boom in technical writer jobs is over.
